Saturday 26th July 2008
We travelled to Eryholme II as league leaders for the first time this season and, on a wicket which looked as if it may have been watered to assist the home bowlers, were asked to bat first on the hottest day so far this season.
The inning started well and although both openers had been dismissed by the thirteenth overs the score was already 67. Alistair Plant then took over and slammed five sixes and two fours in his innongs of 63, his first ever half century,. With Mike Batey making his first half century of the season, an unbeaten 54 including seven boundaries, the innings closed on 206 for seven after thirty five overs.
Although Ingleton were missing Richard Jameson ( holiday), John Overfield ( work) and Mark Jackson ( in the firsts) Ken Gamack and Phil Olney never let Eryholme take charge and the score was only 38 for four after 22 overs when the bowling was changed. Iain Jackson then took three late wickets and the only challenge was whether we could stop the home side earning a batting point as they still needed 15 runs from the last four overs. This was succesfully achieved as the innings closed on 96 for seven and the team stayed in first place in the table.
Saturday 14th June 2008
The seconds travelled to league leaders King James I and were asked to bat first after Mike Batey lost the toss for the sixth time in the last seven games. Yet again Mike Sowerby held the inings together with his innings of 49, scored from 98 deliveries, his efforts deserving more runs on an outfield where groundshots were not fully rewarded. Although Sowerby and Tony Smith put 41 on for the first wicket the side were in trouble at 79 for 5 after 23 overs. At that stage it looked unlikely that a challenging target would be set, especially as King James had twice posted scores in excess of 180 but John Overfield came to the rescue with a trademark innings, scoring 33 from just 28 balls faced, including four fours and a six as the innings closed on 156 for 8 after thirty five overs.
In reply, Kenny Gamack took the first two wickets to fall, but it was Richard Jameson who proved the eventual matchwinner, bowling unchanged for 18 overs to end with figures of 7 for 60 as victory by 27 runs was achieved. A remarkable feature of the King James innings was that all ten wickets were clean bowled and the seconds moved into second place in the table, just one point behind Barton II.

The seconds good form continued with a comfortable 54 run win at home to Haughton II.
It was no surprise when the visiting skipper won the toss yet again but much more surprising when, on a hot day with a dry wicket, he asked Ingleton to bat first.
Mike Sowerby and Graham Sadler made a solid start and reached 64 before Sadler was dismissed for 20. Chris Easby continued to struggle and made his third duck in a row, with the score on 69 for two after twenty overs. Mike Batey joined Sowerby and they took the score to 144 in the 34th over before Sowerby was finally dismissed for a fine 55, including five fours, made from 96 balls faced. Batey also hit five fours as he finished unbeaten on 33 from only thirty five balls as a target of 159 was set.
Haughton II were never in with a chance of victory as wickets fell steadily, Kenny Gamack and Richard Jameson both claiming three wickets as the reply stuttered to 40 for six after nineteen overs. The game could have been finished earlier if the opening bowlers had not been rested to give others a chance and Dave Burton and Chris Easby both claimed a wicket before Jameson returned to claim his fourth victim although Haughton II batted better late on and gained a batting point in the final over with the last pair at the crease.
Special mention must go to Adam Sams whose fielding was outstanding, one instance of a sliding stop, pick up and throw bringing applause from both team mates and spectators.

The seconds bounced back from their first league defeat followed by defeat on Thursday at Aldbrough St John II in the League Cup with an excellent win at Trimdon CCA and moved bact to within one point of the top of the table.
The game was played on the only strip used so far this season and had been played on nine times including the night before and no work had been done because the groundsman hadn't had time. It was hardly surprising therefore that when Mike Batey lost the toss yet again the home captain put the seconds in to bat first! Mike Sowerby, Tony Smith and Graham Sadler naturally found it hard going and only 36 runs came from the first 16 overs. Stuart Dawson then turned the innings around with a superb innings, which was all the more incredible as he had written his car off on the A1 travelling home that morning. Dawson's innings of 98 came from just 67 balls faced and included six sixes and eight fours, including two massive hits that ended up on the college roof.
Trimdon set off as if the target of 147 was no problem and reached 35 after only 9 overs but Kenny Gamack and Richard Jameson then took control and the run rate increased as every over passed. Gamack finished with 1 for 74 from 17 overs but special mention must go to Richard Jameson who, in spite of pulling a calf muscle in the cup defeat earlier in the week, bowled unchanged for 18 overs and finished with excellent figures of 2 for 57 from his 18 overs. Paul Lee batted throughout the Trimdon innings to finish with 51 not out but his side finished ten runs short of victory as the seconds secured twenty vital points in their bid for promotion in their first season.

The seconds lost for the first time this season after travelling to local rivals Lands II and being asked to bat first. Mike Sowerby top scored with 37 and Graham Paylor made his first significant contribution of the season, an unbeaten 36, as a target of 147 was set from thirty five overs.
Lands lost two early wickets but the bowlers were unable to repeat their early season form although two poor umpiring decisions, quite normal at Lands. didn't help. Michael Wilson hit an unbeaten 68 for Lands and Dean Cummings, who benefitted from a run out decision going his way before opening his account, hit a rapid 36. Richard Jameson claimed 3 for 46 from ten overs and Kenny Gamack bowled well without any success but Lands were the better side overall and ran out five wicket winners with almost three overs to spare.

The seconds maintained their unbeaten record with an excellent win over another team expected to challenge for the C division title this season, Richmond IV.
Mike Batey finally won a toss and asked the visitors to bat first and, yet again, all four bowlers turned in solid performances, with Richard Jameson recording excellent figures of four for 17 from 11 overs. The experienced Kenny Gamack and Mark Jackson both claimed another two wickets apiece whilst John Overfield was particularly unlucky. Stuart Dawson, who came out of early retirement to help the side in what was considered a difficult fixture and had already taken a difficult catch, dropped a much easier chance off Overfield's bowling and then saw the same batsman caught behind off Overfield's next delivery. The umpire, however, was unmoved but the catch was so definite it was one of those that did not need an umpire to adjudicate!
In the end that incident made no difference as Richmond were finally dismissed for 68 from 33.2 overs.
Mike Sowerby then chalked up another not out, scoring an unbeaten 16 from 65 balls faced whilst Iain Jackson, who opened the bowling in the previous game, this week opened the batting and proved his worth to the side with an unbeaten knock of 45 from 48 balls, including two sixes and three fours, as the seconds romped to victory and moved into a fourteen point lead at the top of the table.

Ingleton II recorded their third victory in a row with a comfortable six wicket win over an inexperienced Eryholme II. Eryholme elected to bat first but had no answer to the steady bowling of all four Ingleton bowlers, with Richard Jameson and Iain Jackson restricting the visitors to 27 for 1 after 16 overs. The ever reliable John Overfield then claimed two for eight from nine overs and Mark Jackson chipped in with three for 26, also from nine overs.
Tony Smith made 25 from only 22 deliveries but after he lost concentration and was clean bowled by ten years old D Evans Ingleton lost another three wickets before the points were secured. Vice captain Mike Sowerby proved that last weeks knock of 17 not out from 73 balls was no fluke and followed up with an unbeaten 27 from 72 deliveries as the target of 76 was reached with over 11 overs to spare. The win moved the side into second place and also left them as the only unbeaten side in the C division. |

The second team showed five changes from the previous week in an attempt to give everyone a game as soon as possible and were made to fight hard for victory against Cockerton II in a low scoring gamee. All four bowlers used performed well as the home side were restricted to only 75 runs from their thirty five overs with Mark Jackson only conceding nine runs from his 9 overs.
In reply, Mike Sowerby held the innings together with an unbeaten 17 from 73 deliveries and his contribution was vital as four of the early order batsman forgot the main principle of playing forward at Cockerton and were all clean bowled. Victory was anything but assured at 39 for 6 until John Overfield hit two fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 25 from 26 balls to see the side home without further alarms. |

Ingleton II historic first game resulted in an excelllent 65 run win against a weakened Barton II side who were expected to be one of the main challengers for the C Division this season. Asked to bat first, Ingleton made a steady start with Mike Sowerby making 20 from 36 deliveries, on a soft slow wicket. Mike Batey then made 27 from 54 deliveries before being bowled by a full toss attempting to increase the run rate! The innings stumbled from 81 for 5 to 82 for 8 before Alistair Plant finally shook off the effects of a huge hangover to slam two fours and a six in the 34th over to help the side to a respectable 97. Plant had been earmarked for the pinch hitters role at no 3 but when his first words to the skipper were ' I'm just off to see what's in our medicine cabinet' it was decided to alter the batting order accordingly.
With excellent support from the fielders, particularly Ian Jackson who took three good catches at midwicket and cover, Richard Jameson bowled superbly to claim 6 for 9 including a brilliant one handed diving caught and bowled, whilst Kenny Gamack was as reliable as ever finishing with 4 for 14.
A superb start considering the first team had claimed three players from the original second team selected. Special mention to Matty Gore and Kev Hammond who came into the side at the last minute and both performed well in the field. |
