Ingleton won a last over thriller to secure their first silverware of the season – the Fenwick Cup, organised by Aldbrough St John CC. Skipper Rob Waite won the toss and asked Witton-le-Wear to bat on a wicket which looked as though it would help the bowlers. Witton’s openers Peter Crisp and Paul Cooper got off to a steady start, putting on 37 before the first wicket went. After that, wickets fell regularly as tight bowling from Ingleton’s Waite and John Boocock pegged the batsmen back. Boocock recorded figures of 5-33 in a spell of excellent line and length, while Waite claimed 4-46, as Witton were dismissed before their allocated 20 overs. In reply, openers Stuart Laundy and David Wilson began in circumspect fashion before Wilson fell LBW to Willie Nelson for 24. When Laundy went bowled for 21 with the score of 49, the platform seemed to have been laid for a comforatable victory. Peter Mellor struck a well-made 29, but his dismissal sparked an amazing collapse which saw Ingleton go from 81-2 to 85-8 in just four overs, Alan Jones taking four wickets in two overs. Paul Watson was Ingleton’s hero, hitting the winning boundary with just one ball to spare. The game was played in an excellent spirit, and credit must go to the Witton bowlers for keeping their team in with a chance of victory.

The trophy was presented to Rob Waite by Becky Fenwick.

Ingleton consolidated their position as Darlington and District division A leaders with victory over second placed Aldbrough on Saturday.

Batting first on a tricky surface, openers Stuart Laundy and Darren Riley made a cautious start before both were dismissed in their teens. The rest of the afternoon belonged to Stuart Dawson, who hit an unbeaten 98 to set a good target. In reply, bowlers Chris Dent and John Boocock tied the Aldbrough batsmen down to the extent that after 20 overs, they were scoring at fewer than two an over. As they looked to up the run rate, Peter Mellor cashed in, claiming 6-17, including a hattrick, as the visitors were dismissed for 102.

Saturday 7th June 2008

A STUNNING spell of bowling from spinner Grant Sowerby helped Ingleton to victory at Rockliffe Park . Sowerby found good turn and mixed his pace and flight superbly as he claimed seven Rockliffe wickets for just 32 runs to see his side to an 81-run win. Earlier, captain Rob Waite won the toss and elected to bat on hot summer’s afternoon. The slowish pitch held few terrors for the batsmen as the top order turned in its best performance of the season so far. Stuart Laundy led the way with a quick-fire 30, as the Rockliffe opening bowlers stuggled to find a consistent length. After he was out to a sharp catch with the wicket keeper stood up, Simon Gough continued to score at a good rate, while Darren Riley anchored the innings. Gough went for 26 and Rile 20, but Peter Mellor and Phil Olney kept the run rate up before also falling in their 20s. Dave Wilson hit an unbeaten 17 as the Ingleton innings closed on 183 – a good score but one which was well within reach.

Opening bowlers Rob Waite and John Boocock bowled a tight line and length early on to keep the normally free scoring Rockliffe openers, John Pybus and Darren Wheeler in check. It was Boocock who made the vital breakthrough, bowling Wheeler – who has been in excellent form so far this season - for just nine. Sowerby’s introduction came as Pybus was starting to find the middle of the bat. It was long before the Ingleton spinner set wickets tumbling. He removed Warren Spark for eight before deceiving Pybus with a superbly flighted delivery which spun back through the gate. From then on, the only resistance came from Rockliffe skipper, Lee Hart, who finished unbeaten on 37 out of a total of 102.

The win lifts Ingleton back up to third place in the table.

INGLETON returned to winning ways with a comfortable victory against lowly Trimdon Colliery.

Had it not been for the close season merger between Heighinton and Ingleton, Trimdon would have been relegated to the Darlington and District League Division B at the end of last season, so it is perhaps not too surprising to see the side struggling again this term. The architect of Saturday’s win was undoubtedly opening bowler, John Boocock, who returned the remarkable figures of eight wickets for just four runs in 9.5 overs. He sent down seven maidens and took two wickets in an over twice, as all the Trimdon batsmen struggled. Amazingly, Andrew Strong hit 25 of his side’s meagre total as the innings closed on just 37.

In reply, Andy Fothergill was dismissed for a single and Andy Beamson went for four, both to the bowling of Carter, but Ingleton were never in any difficulty as Peter Mellor finished unbeaten on 19 and Phil Olney on eight.

THE old adage about catches winning matches certainly rang true as Middleton won their dale derby against Ingleton. In cold, damp conditions, Middleton batted first and mustered a challenging score of 126, thanks mainly to two of the side’s younger players, Graham Hutchinson and Steven Addison. Hutchinson was unlucky to be out on 49, while Addison hit 20 as they shared a well-made 50 partnership. Earlier, Anthony Coatsworth had kept the Ingleton attack at bay for a carefully made 28. Despite the good efforts of the Middleton batting, Ingleton’s performance in the field was well below par, with a number of chances going begging.Grant Sowerby and Peter Mellow were the pick of the bowlers, each claiming two wickets, and John Boocock found some swing early on to consistently beat the bat.

Ingleton’s reply was a disaster, as six of the top seven batsmen failed to score more than two, to leave the side in deep trouble. Much credit should go to the Middleton players, who caught every chance and fielded like demons. Simon Gough was the top order exception, getting to 18 despite a hamstring injury, and bowlers Rob Waite (36 not out) and John Boocock (19) almost got the visitors in with a shout, but Middleton ran out deserved winners by 19 runs.

INGLETON continued their good start to the season with a comprehensive win when they travelled to Eryholme. The top order batsmen, who have been struggling for form on the wet early season pitches, finally found some fluency, following the recent warm spell. Having been inserted on a pitch which offered little in the way of bounce to the bowlers, Ingleton’s openers, Darren Riley and Stuart Laundy, made a steady, if unspectacular start, laying the foundations for a big score. Both struggled to time the ball during the early overs, and Laundy was handed a reprieve when he edged between wicket keeper and first slip. However, as the overs passed by, both openers began to rediscover their touch, and were still unbeaten at drinks after 20 overs. After the break, they upped the scoring rate, putting on a century before Riley fell to a catch at mid-on having just reached his 50. Laundy was then joined by Simon Gough, who wasted no time in setting about the tiring Eryholme bowlers. Laundy was eventually bowled for 66, while Gough plundered 55 before falling in the final over of the innings as Ingleton racked up 209-3 in their 40 overs.Pick of bowlers were Andy Cairns, with 2-38 and Ingleton old-boy, Ian Hunter, who bowled a lengthy spell to take 1-58.

In reply, Eryholme’s openers had little difficulty seeing off the new-ball as John Boocock and Chris Dent struggled for rhythm early on. With just the loss of Colin Harker by drinks, and big hitting Marcus Clarke at the wicket, it seemed the scene was set for a good run chase. However, the Eryholme batsmen hadn’t taken the introduction of spin bowler Grant Sowerby in account. He changed the game on its head in one over, taking three wickets in four balls and finishing with 5-29. Following Sowerby’s efforts, and with victory beyond them, Eryholme’s lower order batsmen went into defensive mode in an effort to secure a point, which could prove vital later in the season if they are drawn into a relegation battle, and the innings closed on 102-9.

INGLETON claimed a dramatic one-wicket win against Cockerton when the teams met for this Darlington and District League Division A clash.

With the Ingleton wicket still on the green side following all the recent rain, it looked like a day when the bowlers would dominate. However, after home skipper, Peter Mellor, won the toss and asked Cockerton to bat, the visitors got off to something of a flying start, despite the early loss of skipper Farrow for a duck. Opener Dade and number three Dickinson took the attack to Ingleton, skipper Mellor proving particularly expensive, his five overs going for 33. However, the introduction of the ever-reliable Chris Dent and spinner Grant Sowerby soon pegged the opposition back. They were supported by some fielding, with David Wilson take two superbly judged catches to remove Dade for 31 and Dickinson for 40. Following their dismissal, none of the Cockerton batsmen reached double figures as Dent returned figures of 5-25 from 12 overs and Sowerby 4-28 from 11 overs to restrict the visitors to just 102.

Ingleton’s reply was anything but straightforward, as the top order continues to search for some early season form. Stuart Laundy went early for one, and despite some big shots from Darren Riley (19) and Simon Gough (9), the home side was reduced to 46-6, thanks mainly to Dave Glew’s 4-19. Skipper Mellor and Rob Waite steadied the ship with a stand of 19 before Waite was caught at point for 11, and when Ryan Wilson, in his last game before heading to NYSD side Thornaby, went for a duck, Cockerton were favourites to win. However, Mellor found an ally in John Boocock and they took the score to 93 before Mellor was caught for 17. Last man Chris Dent provided calm support as big-hitting Boocock led his side to victory with an unbeaten 22.

Ingleton have now won two of their opening three games, but the batsmen’s form continues to be a worry. With drier weather forecast for the week, harder wickets should result in a few more runs on the board.

Ingleton open 2008 season with win

INGLETON began their Darlington and District League Division A campaign with a hard-fought victory in difficult conditions against local rivals Barningham.

The game was one of only two A division fixtures to go ahead, such has been the poor weather in the lead up to the season, and following Ingleton’s merger with Heighington in the close season, it was a much changed line-up which took the field after skipper Peter Mellor had won the toss and invited Barningham to bat. Rob Waite and John Boocock took advantage of the bowler-friendly conditions to take three quick wickets, before an excellent counter-attack by Michael Roberts gave the Barningham innings some momentum. He found good support from Kyle as the visitors recovered from their shaky start before Roberts fell to an excellent stumping for 36 and Kyle was caught by Darren Riley, off the bowling of Waite, for 29. The partnership helped push the Barningham total up to 105 off their 30 overs, with both sides agreeing this was a competitive total

In reply, Ingleton’s Riley and Simon Gough overcame the early loss of Stuart Laundy, run out going for an ill-judged second, with a well made 50 partnership. Riley, in his usual steady way, got to 16 before he was caught at slip, and Gough hit some lusty boundaries before falling for 44. Peter Mellor could have been run out without facing a ball, and was soon dismissed for 10, and when Phil Olney was LBW for 1, Ingleton were still some way short of their target. However, Wilson and Sowerby saw their side home with a couple of overs to spare, Wilson remaining unbeaten on 25.
